This message is being sent on behalf of Elly Daugherty:
I am so sorry to share with you that we were notified of a student death yesterday morning. Robert “Robbie” Keers was a successful student who attended the business school and was very involved in campus.
Losing another student in such a short time frame is difficult for everyone. Robbie was very involved in his fraternity, Kappa Sigma, as well as the Finance Society. Once the University was notified of his loss, we immediately began outreach to friends and family. This included a recent meeting with members of his fraternity. Christine will be working with students regarding a campus memorial.
Counseling and Mental Health Services (CMHS) is available to provide support to the community at this time of loss. All of you are an invaluable part of the web of response and can be helpful in identifying students in need. CMHS office hours are 8:30 -4:30 M-F and they are located on Arjona 4th floor. There is also a counselor on-call after hours who can be reached by calling 860-486-4705. Students identified as needing support should be encouraged to either walk in during office hours or to please call.
Please know that CMHS will also offer a special open group to any student impacted by this tragedy. The group will meet on Thursday, October 1st at 3:30 p.m. Students who would like to attend should go to Arjona 437. In addition, information about dealing with grief is located on the CMHS website at http://counseling.uconn.edu/dealing-with-grief/
Finally, in addition to the sadness of this immediate incident, we are aware that tragedy may trigger our own personal histories of loss and grief. Staff and faculty in need of support for themselves are encouraged to support one another. In addition UConn’s Employee Assistance Program is available: http://hr.uconn.edu/employee-assistance-program/
The statement shared with the media follows. If you receive any media inquiries, please direct them to Stephanie Reitz.
This is a difficult time for UConn and for the Keers family. Please know how grateful I am for the support you provide our students and each other.
UConn was notified on Monday that Robert Keers, a senior in the School of Business, had died earlier that morning at Windham Hospital. Connecticut State Police say he was transported there from Willington; further inquiries about the investigation should be directed to that agency.
In the short time since we learned of his death, it has become abundantly clear that Robbie had a wide circle of friends at UConn who are profoundly affected by his passing. Our deepest sympathies go out to his family and friends, both in the UConn community and his hometown of Wilton.
As in all such cases, UConn immediately reached out to friends and others on campus who were close to Robbie, and encourages anyone who needs assistance to contact Counseling and Mental Health Services for confidential help.
A team of professionals from throughout the University continues to meet and mobilize resources to help our students, employees and others in whatever ways may be necessary.
Robbie is the fourth UConn undergraduate to pass away unexpectedly since early August. We grieve for each of these valued students, and thank others in Connecticut to extending their support to our campus community and those touched by these painful losses.
